The BBC is commissioning a collection of different, unique and exclusive podcasts in Welsh for BBC Sounds over the next year.
Solving life’s little mysteries, exploring our nation’s history and discussing the best way of facing the apocalypse – BBC Cymru Wales’ seven gripping podcasts promise to have something for everyone.
The new podcasts include a mix of new and familiar voices, following BBC Wales’ commissioning round specifically for Welsh podcasts. For the first time ever, these podcasts have been produced as unique and exclusive content for BBC Sounds, rather than content associated with BBC Radio Cymru programmes.
The first Welsh language podcast released only on BBC Sounds has already proved popular amongst listeners. In Dwy Iaith, Un Ymennydd (Two Languages, One Brain), comedian Elis James explores the way in which language is a key to culture, to another way of seeing the world, and to different personalities.
More bold new content will appear on BBC Sounds in the next few months; and the first of these will be Siarad Secs (Talking Sex) with Lisa Angharad.
Editor of BBC Radio Cymru and Cymru Fyw, Rhuanedd Richards, says: “The fact that we are about to launch a collection of Welsh language podcasts for BBC Sounds is so exciting, and this is the first time that we’ve commissioned brand new content for this platform.
“As a national broadcaster, BBC Wales is always looking for opportunities to reach new listeners across the country with the best possible content, and this collection includes original, honest and interesting content.
“BBC Sounds provides us with a new and creative space to commission content with a different sound to our radio stations. It’s also an opportunity for us to set up opportunities for young producers and to develop new voices – to extend our output and introduce new energy.
“The possibilities are huge, and the opportunity to extend the reach of our content is bigger than ever. I really hope that audiences will find something that they enjoy, and that the sector continues to express ideas for the next commissioning round.”
