UK Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Jeremy Wright, has made a statement in the Commons, updating parliamentarians on the telecoms supply chain review.
The Government’s Future Telecoms Infrastructure Review (FTIR) was set up to look at a long-term, national strategy for world-class digital connectivity. In particular, this review in Parliament is watching closely the roll out of full fibre broadband across the UK, as well as the introduction of 5G mobile networks and infrastructure.
Addressing Members, Jeremy Wright said; “The review has concluded that the current level of protections put in place by industry are unlikely to be adequate to address the identified security risks and deliver the desired security outcomes.
“So to improve cyber-security risk management, policy and enforcement, the review recommends the establishment of a new security framework for the UK telecoms sector. This will be a much stronger security based regime than a present.”
Responding on behalf of the Opposition, Tom Watson replied; “What Britain needs from this review was not ‘muddle’, we needed a model for a genuinely world-class digital infrastructure which we lack at the moment.”
