Creative union, BECTU has backed a public petition asking its union members and the public to sign it in order to save the BBC.
BECTU, the largest representative union within the BBC is posing several demands of the government as part of the petition. They are asking the government to “Stop your political attack on our BBC”; and “Stop attempting to undermine the BBC and the role it plays in independently holding the government to account”.
The union is also insisting that the government “Don’t scrap the licence fee, don’t cut TV & radio stations, don’t cut services”.
Head of Bectu Philippa Childs who signed the petition said: “These continued attacks on the BBC and veiled threats about its future are deeply worrying.
“There are clearly some parts of government that have a fixed agenda of undermining one of the UK’s most well-regarded institutions.
“The arguments and briefings that are coming out of 10 Downing Street at the moment are driven by political ideology rather than knowledge of the contribution the BBC makes to the creative industries and the country.
“Bectu will be campaigning to ensure that the BBC is able to maintain its position as the leading international public service broadcaster that has enough resources to inform, educate and entertain. We need as many people as possible to sign this petition.”
The petition on the 38 Degrees website also states that; “We need to protect the BBC from this political attack. The Prime Minister has already tried to ban journalists he doesn’t like from No.10 briefings, now he and his close advisers are going after our public broadcasters. This is a move straight out of Donald Trump’s playbook.”
