The New York Times has won six World Press Photo awards for work by its Photo and Video teams, and had nominees for Photo of the Year and Online Video of the Year.

The Photo desk won four awards and was nominated for Photo of the Year for a photo by the freelancer Ivor Prickett of an injured Kurdish fighter in the hospital.

The New York Times also won first prize in the Environment – Singles category for “Polar Bear and Her Cub” by Esther Horvath, and won first prize in Portraits – Stories for “The Haunted” by Adam Ferguson, which appeared in The Magazine.

Ivor Prickett placed third in the General News – Stories category for his series, “ISIS and Its Aftermath in Syria,” which contained the photo of the injured Kurdish fighter in the collection.

Matthew Abbott placed second in the Spot News – Stories category for his work showing Australia’s bushfire crisis, including the now-iconic photo of a kangaroo hopping past a burning house.

“For decades, World Press Photo has recognized powerful photojournalism with global impact,” Meaghan Looram said. “It is a great honor to see such a variety of our work included in the awards, and highlights the exquisite breadth of our visual report.”

The Video team won first prize in the Short category in the Digital Storytelling contest, for “‘It’s Mutilation’: The Police in Chile Are Blinding Protesters,” which was also nominated for Online Video of the Year. The Visual Investigations team won third place in the same category for “Russia Bombed Four Syrian Hospitals. We Have Proof.”
