Treaty Talks, led by Kara Rickard (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Koata, Tainui), is an engaging eight-part visual podcast.

It aims to educate both Māori and non-Māori about the Treaty of Waitangi. The podcast highlights its importance today and throughout history.

In the first episode, Māori experts—lawyers, scholars, and treaty educators—explain what a treaty is, why it was necessary, and highlight the key differences between Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its English counterpart, the Treaty of Waitangi.

The series explores various elements of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including the arrival of Captain Cook, the creation of the New Zealand Company, Treaty Settlements, and constitutional changes. It also discusses He Whakaputanga, the Declaration of Independence signed by 34 chiefs in 1835.

The podcast features passionate voices from the Māori community who are striving to reclaim the partnership and self-determination that they believe were intended when Te Tiriti was signed. Kara Rickard engages with these experts, learning from their insights. This series is essential viewing for anyone wanting to grasp the significance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

RNZ Māori Commissioner Jana Te Nahu Owen states that Treaty Talks draws on the knowledge of those who have devoted their lives to understanding the Treaty and Te Tiriti.

“At its core, Treaty Talks serves as an educational tool for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of our foundational documents and their relevance for Aotearoa today.”

Treaty Talks is available now at rnz.co.nz/treaty-talks or on YouTube. The series is produced by Haututū Creatives with support from Te Māngai Pāho.
